Gender and Media Study

Overview

In this project, you will examine constructions of gender and sexuality in Victorian texts and formulate your own vision of gender and sexuality via your engagement with contemporary media and your research of contemporary scholarship.

Objectives

  • Understand diverse viewpoints, including different philosophical and cultural perspectives, specifically relating to gender
  • Demonstrate knowledge about how the arts and humanities of the past relate to our lives in the present and future
  • Understand and apply the research principles and methods of the arts and humanities
  • Access information effectively and efficiently from multiple sources

Basic Requirements

  1. Perform a close reading of any artifact(s) we examined during weeks 5-8, focusing on the subject of gender in Victorian literature.
  2. Analyze a contemporary film or television series, focusing on contemporary representations of gender and sexuality.
  3. Research contemporary scholarship on the relationship between media and representations of gender. Include at least three peer-reviewed sources.
  4. Length: 3000 words

Outcomes

You will have synthesized your critical analysis of a Victorian text and your comparative analysis of a contemporary film or television series to produce an original thesis on representations of gender and sexuality. In addition, your research on media, gender, and contemporary perspectives on the Victorians will support and substantiate your original thesis.
