TED Talks

Project II: TED Talking into Research

For your major research project in this course, we will begin by producing mini TED Talks. The goal of a TED Talk is to create “ideas worth sharing.” I believe that any research you undertake for this course should be grounded in “ideas worth sharing.”

  1. Brainstorm ideas for your Talk. (In-Class Exercises.)
  2. Complete TED Talk research preparation document: TED Talks (Blank). See my example: TED Talks (Art & Business)
  3. Browse and read this web resource from Purdue’s OWL on Conducting Research. Focus on the sections under Primary Research. Write a blog post that describes the kind of primary research that you would like to undertake for your TED Talk / Research Essay.
  4. Draft a transcript for your oral presentation. Goal is 500 words (3 spoken minutes).
  5. Produce 3-5 original slides. Use photography, charts and diagrams, or a mixture of both to create a photo essay.
  6. Put together a recording of your oral presentation. Length: 3 spoken minutes (about 500 words, about 5 slides).

After you have produced a TED Talk, you will be ready to conduct research related to your topic.

  1. Attend a library session.
  2. Research existing perspectives on your topic. Draft an annotated bibliography of at least 3-5 sources. See assignment details here.
  3. Based on your research, annotations, visual aids, and 3-minute talk, draft a research essay on your selected topic. (2000 words)
