Design Project (Spring 2015)

The following project is worth 15% of your final grade.


Section 1: Choose an artifact for you project, and investigate its design elements. Approach the artifact as if for the first time and document every signifier that makes itself visible to you as you engage with it. This stage of the project is primarily descriptive.

Requirements:

  1. Use at least one of these terms in its correct context: human-centered design, affordance, signifier, mapping, or feedback (See Don Norman’s Design of Everyday Things)
  2. Include at least ONE image created by you (photograph or drawing).
  3. Minimum Length: 250 words

Section 2: Propose a futuristic iteration / redesign of this object. Present your redesign through a creative narrative, such a short story or infomercial. This stage of the project is primarily creative.

Requirements:

  1. Emphasis is on WHY your redesign is important, not how it is different.
  2. Minimum Length: 500 words

Section 3: Write a reflection on your creative work in Section 2 that engages with the terms and concepts you have learned in this unit, by referring to specific readings or lesson plans.

Requirements:

  1. Include the title of one reading or activity, with a short description of its relevance.
  2. Minimum Length: 250 words
