Capstone Project

Writing Prompt

Write an academic essay on a theme of your choosing, using texts from your commonplace journal as source texts.

Methods

In this essay, you will demonstrate the three major methods you developed this semester: writing as invention (purpose/Sandbox), close reading (the COIL method), and synthesis (finding patterns).

Essay Requirements

The essay itself is 1000-1500 words (4-5 pages).

  • Present an interesting and unifying theme (synthesis/pattern)
  • Use 5-6 texts from your commonplace book as supporting evidence (close reading/COIL method)
  • Demonstrate an emerging voice on your subject of choice (invention/purpose/Sandbox)
  • Follow MLA guidelines when formatting your essay and providing a works cited page

Assessment Criteria

  • Statement of Significance: You contextualize your multiple quotes to create a meaningful statement about your theme in your commonplace journal that most likely hinges on the break in the pattern
  • Close Reading: You demonstrate understanding of how language–and individual words–contain great depth, nuance, and complexity. You examine various shades of meaning–using multiple definitions from the OED to build out your interpretation–and/or integrating multiple connotations into your interpretation
  • Purpose: You’ve allowed your essay and your voice to lead the way, focusing on what you’re trying to say, rather than trying to sound like someone you’re not. Evidenced by moments of curiosity, inquisitiveness, and breakthroughs
  • Development: Your essay shows thoughtful development and revision, becoming more like a work of art that you can be proud of
