Primary Research

I will be using scholarly articles published by firsthand researchers who specialize in child psychology that have taken an interest in the effects of video games on the minds of children. I have found several articles that fit this criteria and they were very helpful in learning more about this issue. Additionally, looking into court cases that have made claims of influence from violent television or video games may prove to be helpful. Records of deaths that make similar claims may show some insight into the most extreme of effects of games on the minds of youth. With all the options available, finding suitable articles for my research should be fairly painless.

Don’t Start!

“It’ll make you cool.” “Everyone is doing it!” “It’s not that big of a deal.” Its words like these that cause young people to start smoking cigarettes in the first place. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death globally. It can be used as a form of relaxation for some, but for most it is a social stigma. Smoking does so much damage to not only the person smoking, but to the people around them. Second hand smoke is the leading cause of lung cancer besides smoking its self. People will tell you that it is a way for them to relax; some will tell you that just the motion of bringing the cigarette to your mouth and back down again is what does it for them. But once you start smoking, the harder it is to quit. It only takes one cigarette to get addicted. I have two people in my life that I am very close with and they both are going through the process of quitting smoking. One gradually quit only having one here and there, and the only smoked and smoked until the day before she said she would quit. The friend who gradually quit is having a much easier time giving it up than the one who didn’t. Although neither of them have given in to their cravings at all, if you were to ask them about it, they will tell you that it may be one of the hardest things that they have ever done.

Relationships are a huge part of all of our lives. Whether we see it or not relationships form who we have been, who we are, and who we will be for the rest of our lives. Relationships can be all sorts of occurrences from friendly daily hellos to intimate sexual relations. Relationships are hard; they are fragile, unexplained and not very well understood. For being such an impactful part of our lives I think we as a society need to take a closer look at relationships and especially the relationships in our lives.

First, relationships are not something to toy with. Relationships always make a difference on the lives of others and to be playing with someone else’s emotions is worse than playing with fire. We have all heard the saying treat others the way you would like to be treated but if someone is truly important to you, you should treat them with more respect and care than you expect to get back. In a true solid relationship respect must be given more than it should be expected. Respect should be at the core of relationships. It would be very difficult to keep a long-term relationship without it building on trust respect and honesty.

To have respect we need to build trust. As humans it is very difficult for us to trust everyone around us. We need to build trust and stay loyal in order to keep respect. Trust is built over time and it comes on a person-to-person basis and everyone is different. There are many hard lessons in life; lessons we don’t even think about but use each and every day. This starts in your childhood and it never stops until the day we die. We are always learning, always changing, always trying to better who we are but is this always the best for us?

Who we are is influenced so much based on the people around us and we usually find this to be a good thing. This is one of the reasons we protect our families and care so much for the ones we care about but unfortunately this can also be the reason for young kids to join gangs or try drugs or anything like this. Our friends can influence us to try new things and take risks in order to be cool or to fit in. I have had trouble with this throughout my life especially after I moved. I was very vulnerable and some “friends” got the best of that, convincing me to make decisions that I am not proud of. The trust we have in our friends can influence our whole lives. Choices like these can influence the rest of our lives from the time we are just adolescents.

In conclusion, relationships can affect all the choices we make each and every day. They can create a life or hurt a future. Relationships affect every aspect of our lives and can create happiness in everyone. We need to understand each other in order to better ourselves and others. We need to build each other up and create a positive influence on others.

After looking at the Purdue website and reading what it has to say about conducting research, I would say that I will need to find primary sources as much as possible in order to have the most credible information. Some of these primary sources will be hard to come by and to find like the survey sources since this is more of a recent issue which would mean that not a large amount of people would know much about it. I personally do believe that there will be some great facts that could be available if i make sure to find specific topics that are being discussed. Of the four main types of primary sources including surveys, interviews, observations, and analysis I personally think that the best one that could be used for me are the analysis and the observations.

By using these two sources in my paper I will be able to give a great argument by talking about the observations that were recorded in the world and then there would be a complete analysis of those observations. this would be the perfect combination to have with my paper because I believe that by giving facts and then examples it creates the best argument when trying to explain something or persuade someone. Another good thing about a primary source is that someone’s opinion does not affect how you would look at the data like a secondary source would which allows people to make their own decision. These are the main things I would try and look for when finding sources.

Smoking and Relaxation

A lot of people today will tell you that a way that they relieve stress or a way for them to cool down from a long day will be to smoke a cigarette. Smoking a cigarette gives people the satisfaction of cooling down after a long day, just being able to go outside, sit down, relax, and have a cigarette makes them feel so much better after a hard day. Some could even say just the motion of smoking, bringing the cigarette up to your mouth, inhaling, then exhaling the smoke gives them the satisfaction that they need. But you only need to smoke one cigarette to get addicted to them; you could realize how much you enjoy it and keep doing it and doing it until it is too late. Quitting smoking might be one of the hardest things to do because Nicotine is the most addictive substance there is, which makes it the hardest to quit. People do not realize how terrible smoking can be for themselves, and if they do they don’t care or just like the satisfaction of smoking more. They would rather have that way to relax than having a healthy body, lungs and area around them.

Smoking not only causes terrible effects on the person smoking, but also for the people around them. Second hand smoke is just as harmful to the people around as to the person smoking. Not only does it do damage to everyone around, it is a terrible smell to be around. No one wants to smell like that or be around that smell. In fact, a lot of bars and public places around the country are banning the use of cigarettes because they are seeing how much business is kills for them.

Smoking can also be used as a social stigma for a lot of people. It is what is considered the cool thing to do in teenagers these days. They do it because their friends do it and everyone wants to be accepted in the social world, it’s their way of moving up. But starting smoking at such a young age can do so much more damage than you could ever imagine.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death globally. If we can prevent it then why does is it still such huge problem? As it was said before, smoking is used as a form of relaxation. With the way that the economy is going right now, jobs are getting harder and harder to find, so a college degree is something that you need to have these days to be able to get a decent job. With that in mind, going through about 4 years of college could be very stressful for some students. As a form of relaxing after a long day some students could resort to smoking. All they really need to do is a find another way of calming down and relaxing. Maybe that could be, taking a little nap, or going to work out, anything that is not doing great harm to their body.
