The Future of Dickens: Digitizing Architectural Spaces and Identity


Couse Objectives and Outcomes

(1) To articulate major design issues of the nineteenth century,

(2) To interpret descriptions of domestic settings in Victorian literature, and

(3) To produce multimodal projects on the relationships between architectural design and human identity.


Assignment Objectives and Outcomes

(1) To visualize characters and spaces, and their relationships, depicted in the Victorian novel

(2) To engage with the emotions and beliefs of the novel, its characters, and its spaces

(3) To construct a thesis, with supporting arguments and evidence, through the use of images, diagrams, and text strategically embedded into the digital plane

(4) To become adept in visual communication platforms and implement their features in logical and convincing ways


Questions

(1) How does this multimodal project respond to Hard Times in ways that a standard essay assignment could not?

(2) In what ways might such a project facilitate students’ growth as readers and critics of literature?
